Across the Mediterranean, vital seagrass meadows formed by Posidonia oceanica are rapidly disappearing.
These underwater forests are essential for marine biodiversity, water quality, and coastal protection. Yet 90% of Mediterranean seagrass habitats have already been damaged due to anchoring, coastal development, pollution, invasive species such as Caulerpa taxifolia, and marine debris.
The loss of Posidonia meadows signals serious ecosystem decline and increases coastal erosion.
Protecting them requires stronger regulation, sustainable mooring systems, marine litter management, invasive species control and habitat monitoring.
