Support young scuba divers' mission towards marine conservation
I am Arnav Nair, a rising senior at Eastside Preparatory School. My co-lead Wyatt Berry and I are organizing a series of clean-up dives to remove trash, debris, and plastic pollution in our local Seattle waters. Currently, our organizers and volunteers have collected and disposed of 100+ pounds of trash from our waters, through clean-up dives in Lake Washington and in the Puget Sound. We plan to continue these dives with our next dive expected to be this upcoming Fall.
Why are we doing this?
Our oceans are facing unprecedented levels of pollution, with plastic waste being one of the most serious threats. Over 11 million metric tons of plastic waste enter our oceans annually, with projections showing this could triple by 2040 without immediate action. This crisis affects over 800 marine species and has far-reaching consequences for our ecosystem.
In the Pacific Northwest, our unique marine ecosystems are especially vulnerable to the effects of pollution. Marine debris not only threatens wildlife through entanglement and ingestion but also introduces harmful chemicals into the food chain. By removing debris from Seattle's waters, we can help protect our local marine life and preserve the health of Puget Sound.
Our fundraising efforts go towards the conservationists at PADI AWARE, who are dedicated towards preserving our marine environment.
With every piece of plastic removed, we hope to help restore balance to the ocean and inspire others to act.
