Supporting the AWARE Foundation's effort in marine conservation

I’m raising funds to support an important local project dedicated to retrieving lost fishing gear and ghost nets from the Baltic Sea and Stockholm’s archipelago.

Every year, tons of fishing equipment are accidentally lost beneath the surface. These “ghost nets” continue to trap fish, seals, and birds — silently damaging marine life and ecosystems.

With your support, we can locate, document, and safely remove this hidden waste from the sea. Every contribution goes directly toward covering diving operations, equipment, and disposal costs.

Together, we can make a real difference for the Baltic Sea — restoring life, protecting biodiversity, and creating a cleaner ocean for future generations.

Silent Damage in the Baltic Sea: Fishing Where It’s Forbidden

Thursday 16th Oct

In the calm bays of Stockholm’s archipelago, where pike come to spawn each spring, the sea should be full of life. Instead, divers often find lost lures, tangled lines, and other traces of illegal fishing — even in areas where fishing is strictly forbidden.

Many of those who fish here are not acting out of malice. They are people looking to escape the stress of everyday life — seeking peace, solitude, and connection with nature. But beneath the surface, the damage is real. Each lost lure or line can continue to trap wildlife for years, while repeated disturbance of these shallow spawning grounds destroys vital habitats for pike and other species.

The Baltic Sea is already under pressure from pollution, eutrophication, and rising temperatures. When protected areas are ignored, recovery becomes even harder. As divers, we see the consequences first-hand — and we know how much difference small actions can make.

By removing ghost gear, reporting illegal fishing activity, and respecting local regulations, we can give these fragile ecosystems a chance to heal. The sea gives us peace — it’s time we return the favor.

Support our divers working to clean up these areas. Every donation helps us remove lost fishing gear, protect spawning grounds, and restore life to the Baltic Sea. Together, we can make the ocean a little safer — one dive at a time.
